Up for auction is a 1960's Calico Lassie doll, which is an Ideal Tammy clone but was actually made by Unique (this doll is so marked, but I couldn't get a good picture of it). It was sold by Kellogg's (a sponsor for the Beverly Hillbillies) and was intended to look like Elly May Clampett, a character on the Beverly Hillbillies TV show. This lovely doll, which has been in my personal collection for many years, is in excellent condition and I think she is just stunning! Lassie has a love...ly face with wonderful color, blonde hair in unusually good shape, and a body that is free of any notable flaws. Lassie's hair has been washed, conditioned, and styled, leaving it looking quite beautiful, but it is still slightly dry, especially at the ends. Lassie's face has a small white smudge that is on the upper cheek to your right in the closeup picture (9th pic). I didn't notice it until I looked at the pictures and it is very minor--even if you are looking for it it is easy to miss. Lassie's body has tight joints and shows almost no wear. Fingers are all there and the heels are unscathed. The only things I noticed are a small dark speck on the back of one calf (high up to your left in last pic) and one leg is slightly longer, which surely was the case when she was manufactured.
The doll comes with lots of clothing and accessories, including several original Calico Lassie outfits/clothing items, several other factory made doll clothing items (some Barbie), and several handmade doll dresses. Both the doll and clothing items are clean and free of unpleasant odors. Although some of the clothing items are not perfect, everything is in good condition. I have tried everything on the doll to make sure all items fit. The white shoes are vintage and, though not original, look similar to the shoes that were sold with this doll. I also found some nylon panties that fit Lassie well, but the panties can't be worn with some of the tighter fitting clothing items, such as the bell bottom pants and the green swimsuit.
Original Calico Lassie clothes include:
- Lavender gingham "Party Outfit" consisting of dress & bloomers. This dress has a repair in back which is not obvious. The elastic waist of the panties is in good shape.
- Yellow flower pattern dress with matching bloomers. This dress has also been repaired. The elastic in the bloomers is a bit stretched but still retains some elasticity.
- Orange & green dress with orange gingham panties. The dress is in excellent shape. The panties are a bit dingy and frayed at the leg openings, but the elastic is good. I found a white plastic basket with carrots & tomatoes with a handle that swivels that is the perfect accessory for this outfit. It is unmarked but most likely is a Barbie item. The straw hat with pink gingham band looks cute with it as well!
- Blue & white striped top, which Lassie originally wore with matching blue pants. I don't have the pants but I found some vintage blue shorts with a red tie in front that match the top well.
- Red & white flannel pajama top, without the matching bottoms, but it goes well with the blue shorts as well. The pajama top is stiff in back on both sides due to dried glue (this is how it came to me) but the front looks just fine.
Vintage factory made clothing items include:
- Pink shirt that snaps in back & green bell bottom pants with big blue, pink & white flowers. I found a colorful striped cloth bag that looks so cute with this outfit (I added the flower button) as well as the broad brimmed pink hat with pink bow in front. The pants have some missing stitching here and there but overall the pieces are in good condition. This is the perfect 1960s flower child outfit:) The broad brimmed pink hat is unique and could be used with several of the outfits.
- Vintage green nylon Barbie swimsuit with a beautifully handmade pastel striped cover up which Lassie is wearing in the 8th picture. The outfit comes with a pink swivel handle bucket full of "sand, " which is most likely a Barbie item but is unmarked.
- Long green & pink prairie style dress--untagged but I think it is a vintage Barbie item.
- Long yellow dress with orange trim at the bottom--which might also be a Barbie item. The dress has a loop in the back but the button is missing (it needs a very tiny button).
I am also including several handmade clothing items that fit Lassie well and are a good style for her. The two lovely plantation style dresses are handmade Barbie dresses that were made by a talented seamstress. They are beautiful items with meticulous attention to detail. I found them years ago and have always loved them. They are little big for Barbie so they fit Lassie perfectly. I thought the blue handbag looked cute with the blue & white dress, especially after I added the flower details. The blue & white dress came with a matching bonnet that is too small for Lassie but I am including it in the auction because it goes with the dress. I think the straw hat with pink band looks cute with both dresses, although it is obviously a better match for the pink gingham dress. It is a nice accessory that goes well with several of Lassie's outfits.
In addition to the plantation style dresses, I am including a handmade long pink gingham dress that is pretty simple & basic but still cute. I somehow managed to hide it in most of the pictures, so I wanted to mention it. Also, there is a navy and white dress with puffy sleeves-it is a little big but it is a cute style for her.
This doll would be a wonderful addition to your collection!
