Chinese Antique Bronze Figural ‘Foreigner’ Picket Candlestick, Ming dynasty C.16-17th Cast in the form of a foreign figure standing above a rectangular base upon a gallery stand, with serious expression and an exposed rounded chest and belly. He wears a lose-fitting rope upon trousers and boots, they flare towards the sleeves and have decorated floral sprays upon the hems. The hands with elongated fingers that are classic of the period, the right hand on his waist and the left... raised, all beneath a central lotus-form drip pan, surmounted by a candle pricket; the bronze patinated to a rich brown hue. As a motif in Chinese art history, Western foreigners bearing exotic tribute to the Chinese court is a longstanding theme that may be traced to the Tang dynasty (618-906), when the increased presence of foreigners in China brought in new fascination among the Chinese and led to a gradual stylisation of the image of the foreigner in Chinese art. In the early and middle Qing dynasty, the theme blossomed with their visual attributes not referring to a specific place, but rather an assimilation of the distant beyond. These representations of Westerners in uncharacteristic attitudes were surely to satisfy the curiosity of Chinese patrons and not for the export market. They form, moreover, a veritable record of period cosmopolitan life.
