Y., a member of the 308th Infantry which was later a part of the "Lost Battalion." Based on some cursory research, it appears the individual was wounded months prior to the unit being surrounded by German forces. The individual was listed in the - WORLD WAR I - CASUALTIES OF AMERICAN ARMY OVERSEASREPORTED ON JULY 26, 1918 as... SEVERELY WOUNDED - John Ensmenger, Brooklyn, N. Y. In the book "Brooklyn and Long Island in the War" which was published in 1917 - has John Ensmenger, 177 Huron St. assigned to the 308th Infantry, Co. B. While universally known as the "Lost Battalion", this force actually consisted of companies from 4 different battalions - A, B, C Companies of the 1st Battalion 308th Infantry Regiment The 308th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the 154th Infantry Brigade of the 77th Infantry Division. It was organized at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York in September 1917 and was composed of men drafted from throughout the greater New York City area.Upon reaching Europe, the 77th Division was assigned to the British command where it trained with the British army until early June 1918. Following the completion of this additional training, the Regiment was moved up to the front in the Baccarat Sector, specifically the town of Badonviller.In early September, the Regiment was moved to the Argonne Forest to participate in the Oise-Aisne campaign.Companies involvedApproximately 3.5" X 5.5" overall, shipping weight approximately 3 ounces.
