CHARLESTON SC SEP 12 1864 10 (due) "Signal Corp" WALLPAPER cover Arthur Grimball! Cover was opened on the right side with minor irregular loss, cover has been completely opened for display. Very nice two shades of gray on white wallpaper was used to make this adversity cover. Arthur Grimball the son of John Berkley Grimball and the brother of CSN Lieut. John Grimball who served on the CSS Shenandoah. Arthur was at Fort Sumter and stationed at Battery Wagner during the assault of July 1...8, 1863, biography from the internet is shown below.BiographyArthur Grimball was bornat Pinebury, Colleton County S.C. and educated for the most part in CharlestonS.C. where he began his career in mercantile life. He enlisted as private inthe Marion Artillery the first year of the war. In 1862 he was detached fromthis command and appointed to the Signal Corps, was stationed many months in Fort Sumter. Was there during theglorious defense in April 1863. Was on duty and had command of a gun at BatteryWagner during the desperate assault on the night of July 18, 1863. The enemymade 8 successive assaults, each time with fresh troops. For his conspicuousgallantry in taking a message from Battery Gregg to Battery Wagner under atremendous fire he was placed on the Roll of Honor. The general orders beingdated Richmond Virginia 10 August 1864. On the evacuation of Charleston hereformed the Marion Artillery and with them surrendered at Greensboro, N.C.under General Johnson.Died at Charleston SoCaat No 61 Lynch Str. – on Sunday evening 27th Mar. 1894 at twenty five minutespast seven o’clock of contracted kidney, a form of Bright’s disease, ArthurGrimball, son of John Berkley Grimball and Meta M.
