He enlisted as private inthe Marion Artillery the first year of the war. In 1862 he was detached fromthis command and appointed to the Signal Corps, was stationed many months in Fort Sumter. Was there during theglorious defense in April 1863. Was on duty and had command of a gun at BatteryWagner during the desperate assault on the night of July 18, 1863. The enemymade 8 successive assaults, each time with fresh troops. For his conspicuousgallantry in taking a message from Battery Gregg to Battery Wagner under atremendous fire he was placed on the Roll of Honor. The general orders beingdated Richmond Virginia 10 August 1864.
