Cancer is an astrological sign, one of the twelve signs of the classical or Roman zodiac. This sign originated with the constellation Cancer and is the fourth sign of the zodiac. In Greek mythology, Cancer is a crab that plays a minor role in the twelve labors of Hercules. While he was busy fighting the monster of multiple heads, the Hydra, Hercules was beset by the crab Cancer, who sought to distract him. Cancer was set on him by the goddess Hera, and even though the little crab's attempts to pinch Hercules and disrupt his concentration failed, he was given a place in the sky in appreciation of his efforts, albeit not a very bright one - the constellation of Cancer is a particularly small and dim one!
The Sign of Cancer
As a sign of the zodiac, Cancer is classed as a yin sign, or a feminine, introverted sign. It is a water sign, and it is also one of the four cardinal signs. Traditionally, in astrology, Cancer is ruled by the moon, and its opposite sign is Capricorn. Cancer's period, when it is occupied by the Sun, runs from June 22 to July 22, and the Fourth House is the house associated with Cancer.
In astrology the astrological signs of the twelve houses equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to astrological beliefs, celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that the twelve signs at the same time are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression.
Those born under the sign of Cancer are said to be warm, loving, loyal, protective, sincere, resourceful, romantic, and tenacious, although they can also be devious, moody, or even depressive.
