Scarce Pair Cowan Pottery Rowfant Club Groundhog Candlesticks - Bookends

For auction we are offering for your bidding consideration a very scarce pair of Cowan Pottery candlesticks. The candlesticks were made for the Rowfant Club of Cleveland, Ohio. They depict a groundhog holding a branch in one arm and an open book in the other.Designed by Frank M. Wilcox [1887-1964]. Marked Rowfant Club 1925 R G Cowan. One is number 10 and the other is number 127 of 156 copies. Founded in 1892 the Rowfant Club is Cleveland's premier bibliographic society celebrating the ...art of the book including paper making, binding, and printing. With the Shakespearean motto of "Light Seeking Light Doth Light Of Light Beguile". Members meet annually on Groundhogs Day [Candlemas] and each member receives a candlestick often designed to include their mascot the groundhog. Members use these candlesticks theoughout the year to reserve their seats at dinner at their weekly meetings. They measure 9 1/2" x 5". I've seen auction results and they are always for one. I initially thought they were bookends since they are so heavy. they weigh over 3 lbs. each. I suspect they could double as candlesticks and bookends since they were for members of a book club. I initially thought there was a chip on the upper right edge of the book on one of them but after looking under 10x power magnification it is in the making. Great condition for a pair that has been around almost 100 years.
