BREATHTAKING!!! This 130 year old Rookwood Vase is absolutely gorgeous. The yellow flora decor is extensive in design. This piece is a wonderful example of HIGH QUALITY ROOKWOOD! Finished i...n my favorite, The Standard Glaze, a yellow-tinted HIGH GLOSS clear glaze, often used over flower motifs. Known for its classic beauty, the Standard Glaze was Rookwood's first glaze to win international recognition and awards (I am also selling a 25 pound Standard Glaze showpiece, see my other listings). Standing at just under 6 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches wide, with only mild scant crazing on the lower portion, none on the upper body and one tiny glaze pop, unnoticeable, in one of the flower edges. It breaks my heart to sell this piece. However, I am selling most of my Rookwood Collection for necessary reasons. I know that the next owner is going to adore it, just as I have. Please know that all of my pottery comes from a clean, pet free, smoke free environment and have been displayed in protective conditions. Please view photos for condition. No damage is present on this piece. See photo #9 for minor split in the clay INSIDE the vase, that obviously occurred in the kiln, during the production of the piece.
All of the identifying marks are present on the bottom. Stamped with the Reverse RP Rookwood Factory Mark with Four Flames, indicating this piece was made in 1890. Shape number 517 D. This shape was created by Pitts Harrison Burt. I am also selling another piece that is also shape 517, however it is a larger size B. A larger size of this same shape. Please see photo #12 to view the other vase. And check out my other listings if you’re interested in purchasing the larger one. Please note the larger one is NOT INCLUDED in this sale. The artist who created this masterpiece, however, is Rookwood Artist Sarah Toohey, better known as Sallie. Her initials are inscribed on the bottom. An ‘L’ is under the artist’s initials. One theory suggests this may be the decorator requesting the finisher use light yellow glaze. Ms. Toohey's attention to artistic detail on this vase is phenomenal. She worked for Rookwood from 1888-1931, making this one of her earlier pieces. She had a long career with the Pottery and in her later years, Ms. Toohey took over the Glaze Department. Her pieces are Highly Desirable for Collectors.
From my home to yours, I will be sure to pack this valuable and precious antique piece of Rookwood art pottery history with great care, to ensure that it arrives to you in as great of condition as it is in today. This is most definitely one of my favorites!
