David Camden Studio Art Pottery Raku Fired Temple Jar Covered Vessel Virginia 86
Item History & Price
DAVID CAMDEN RAKU POTTERY TEMPLE JAR
Available for purchase is a wonderful studio pottery "temple jar" created by David Camden, a well-known potter based in Glen Allen, Virginia. This large footed vessel has an Oriental look with a wonderful Raku-fired crackle surface. The jar portion has a salmon-colored glaze with applied legs, wings, and lid finial. The temple jar stands about 13 1/4" tall to the top of the lid and measures approximately 10 5/8" wide. The inside of on...e of the legs is marked "MDC" (for Matthew David Camden) and dated "86" (1986). A very similar temple jar is displayed at the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts in Farmville, Virginia. I purchased this piece at an estate sale several years ago.
David Camden (1956 - ) is particularly well known for his dramatic and distinctive Raku pottery. Raku is a low-temperature firing technique, which results in porous pottery with a unique "crackle" pattern in the surface glaze. The pot is removed from the kiln while glowing hot and then placed in a container filled with a combustible substance, such as wood-chips, sawdust, leaves, or paper. The thermal shock produces the craze pattern as well as a smoked, accidental quality to the glaze. The history of Raku goes back some 400 years and is associated with the Japanese drinking of tea and Zen Buddhism.
Camden received his degree in ceramics from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont in 1978. Soon after, he opened Camden Clayworks in Ashland, Virginia. In addition to apprenticing many students in his studio over the years, he has also taught pottery in the Richmond area, primarily at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. He has been included in as many as 50 shows in the Virginia area and his works are in numerous private collections. He won Best in Show on several occasions and still displays in art shows throughout Virginia. He has a studio at his home in Hanover County and a gallery located in Ashland, Virginia.
