The shape of this vase is referred to as a rotund vase due to its diameter being greater than its overall height. This vase is an attractive, wonderful piece from Rookwood. This... item was created during the Great Depression, when money for food was hard to come by and most of the arts suffered. This piece would be a spectacular addition to anyones collection or a great way to start one! The aforementioned item is part of Rookwood's Production Wears line, established and produces from 1904 until the companies closure in 1968. Production Wear was meant to be a massed produced, commercial line of ceramic art-wear. This line was geared towards the masses for purchase and enjoyment and would have been meant for use in everyday life. Pieces from the Production Wears Line were molded and formed and decorated using single-colored matte glazes. At the start of the 20th century consumers and critics were calling out for a less ornate, formal style ceramic, one that removed the high-shine exterior of works produced up until this point. This call gave rise to one of the most iconic and celebrated glazing techniques in Rookwood's artistic arsenal and continued to bolster their reputation as a leading American based ceramic company until the company closed its doors. The Rookwood Company was founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Nichols. The company having being founded by a women at this time was unusual and was a leading promoter of women in the work force, something no other American company was doing at this time. Founded in Cincinnati Ohio, the company won quick acclaim for their ingenuity and design. Their passion for looking toward the future garnered in a promising age of success that overstepped two World Wars and The Great Depression and crated an iconic American ceramic style that is engrained in our nations blue-print.
