This post Civil War letter was written November 12, 1865 by Lloyd Manning (see biography below) in Winchendon, Virginia and sent to his mother Lydia Manning in Warwick, MA.Lloyd W. Manning (1837-1883). Prior to the Civil War he worked as a machinist in the Springfield Armory. We also know that he was married to Lydia F. Phillips on 4 January 1864 — just days before leaving to be a soldier in the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. Lloyd never rose above the ran...k of private while serving with his unit. Though he was an “armorer, ” he appears to have rapidly been offered a “choice” position of serving as a cook for the officers which enabled him to avoid some of the less desirable duties, to eat relatively well, and stay out of the line of fire. It also afforded him more time to record his observations of the war from the general vicinity of Bermuda Hundred where he spent the majority of his time in the service.A descendant was told by one of his great grand daughters that “he died of fever and ague — that he never recovered from the war, [and that] he played guitar.” In 1878 he was initiated into the Masons and accepted as a member the following year. Death records give his cause of death as a heart attack at the age of 46 while still employed as a “mechanic” in a sewing machine factory. He was buried in Central Cemetery, Orange, Franklin county, Massachusetts.Manning writes rather extensively about his work after the war in this letter.
