Item History & Price
YOU ARE BUYING HERE (1 of a kind ) From the desk of the Mayor of Niagara Falls 1940 - 1946
Item # 13106...... A WWI 76th Battalion Sternau Coffee Machine Presentation gift from the Officers of the Barrie Detachment. This rare gem has several things going for it. So to start we will for go the antique aspect until the end and focus on the WWI aspect. As mentioned it is a 1 of a kind 76th Battalion Sternau Coffee MachinePresentation ...gift from the Officers of the Barrie Detachment. It comes with the unused machine and the original engraved presentation tray as well. The coffee machine as you can see, has a stunning 76th Battalion (Barrie, Ontario) Officer's Badge with silver overlay mounted to it. The badge measures approx. 33mm wide and 33mm tall. Below that, the same style and size of the badge is engraved into the face of the unit for a double 76th Bn accent. The Tray being dated FEB 24th 1916 presented to G.R. Inglis.
The 76th Battalion was out of Barrie and mobilized at Niagara Camp effective August 15th 1915. The battalion sailed for England on April 23rd 1916 where it was merged with the 36th Battalion. Being fully depleted of all ranks effective July 17th 1917 the battalion was officially disbanded under General Order 82 of 1918.
The second aspect regarding this item, is who the gift was given to, and that being G.R. Inglis. It is ironic that they were mobilized at Niagara Camp as this fellow George R. Inglis became the Mayor of Niagara Falls from 1940 to 1946. So this item is not only a great (1 of a kind ) 1908 antique Solid copper Sternau Coffee Machine, but a (1 of a kind ) Canadian WWI enthusiasts item & a (1 of a kind ) Barrie Ontario enthusiasts/historian item, but also a truly unique (1 of a kind ) piece for an elite Niagara Falls Ontario enthusiasts/Historian item. As for the antique aspect, this 1908 solid copper 2 1/2 pint alcohol-burning percolating Sternau Coffee Machine stands at 15" tall is 100% complete down to the original burner cap with matching original 14" x 10 3/8" solid copper tray by Sternau. The marks on the tray are NOT gouges or scratches. They are a reaction to the tinned finish from what ever liquid they served and wiped. Under is real solid copper, and its true color which comes out as a slightly different copper hue than the original tinned finish when cleaned. The tray shows just a hint of two small very mild bumps bottom left corner face. I mentioned it is unused which it is, but the underside of the of the coffee pot shows evidence that it was lit once for a brief moment and that was it. (See Photo) There is no damage or dings on the coffee unit itself and the glass is free of any chips or damage as well, there is a bump on the underside bottom of the burner unit and some lite corrosion on the burner unit cap as shown, as it is over 100 years old. This item has not been cleaned nor has the tray. The badge I gave a lite buff with 0000 steel wool as it was all black.
