Rolex GMT Master II Oyster Perpetual Date Watch with Black and Red BezelRare Style #16760, also Referred to as "Sophia Loren" ModelThis very rare and much sought-after Rolex GMT Master II is in almost pristine condition and has seen very light use. There are only faint marks around the case, and the face is perfect. The original Jubilé bracelet is also in excellent condition with just some faint signs of wear. It includes the original boxes and manuals, along with a Certificate of Aut...henticity - everything that was included when it was purchased at the main Bucherer location in Lucerne, Switzerland in October 1985 with the exception of the little badge that was attached. (If located after the sale, it will be forwarded to buyer.) A collector might note that the external box is a special design, possibly unique to Buchere, as opposed to the box used in the United States. The last Rolex service was several years ago, but it has hardly been worn since and has been kept in its box. It operates perfectly and the appearance is exceptional for a timepiece of that age.
History of the GMT LineThe original Rolex GMT was designed as an aviator watch. It was developed in cooperation with Pan Am, who asked Rolex in the 1950s to develop a watch which could tell different times simultaneously. As flying distances got longer, the newly introduced fourth hand allowed the display of an additional time, with the corresponding number markings on the outer bezel.
Pilots used the second time to display the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which led to the name Rolex GMT Master. Although Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) got replaced 1972 in the Aviation Industry by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the term GMT is still known and kept as part of the name of the GMT Master, even though Pilots nowadays use it to set UTC.
Introduced in 1983, the Ref. 16760 was the first of the new GMT-Master II collection and the 6th GMT model in the series. In terms of design, the GMT-Master II 16760 sported a thicker case, a wider bezel, and larger crown guards than its predecessors. These design details led to the Ref. 16760’s famous nickname, the “Fat Lady”. The Ref. 16760 is also sometimes called the “Sophia Loren” drawing comparisons between the new curves of the watch and the Italian beauty. It was also the first GMT to use a black and red insert sometimes Referred to as the "Coke" insert and a gloss black dial with white-gold index surrounds. The Rolex GMT Master II 16760 was in production until 1988 and was only ever crafted in stainless steel with the red and black bezel.
