(genuine) JOURNEY TO INDIA By The Prince of Wales
Map, 41 Engravings and Text
- 1875 -* * * * * * * * * * * This is a very scarce "special edition" item published a century and a half ago in Victorian England. Titled "India and the Prince of Wales, " this was a pictorial report on an excursion taken by the heir to the British throne in 1875. It consists of a skilled rendition of the journey, accompanied by a large map upon... which the journey's route of travel could be followed, as well as 41 wood engravings of scenes along the way.
This is a great piece of history, representing a new type of journalism that was designed to allow the "armchair traveler" to experience a virtual reenactment of a trip abroad. The trip was the one taken by Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales, the oldest son of Queen Victoria, and the destination was India. The reader was presented with a lengthy narrative, written by George Augustus Sala, a noted British journalist and experienced world traveler. In addition, there was a large map specially created to accompany this narrative and show the actual itinerary for the Prince of Wales' journey, and interwoven with the text were 41 wood engravings showing places and events along the way.
This is a very historic item, a pictorial record of a trip to the "Jewel in the Crown of the British Empire." It is a 48-page special edition of the "Illustrated London News" (plus map) published in 1875 and containing 41 wood engravings.
Size: The map measures 22 inches high by 15 inches wide, including margins. The pages of this special edition each measure 16 inches by 11 inches and there are 11 full-page engravings, 16 half-page engravings, and 14 smaller engravings.
Condition: This historic travel portfolio is in excellent condition. The map is absolutely pristine and the text and engravings are free of any significant flaws. The spine is rough, with some looseness, but this does not affect the contents in any way, and all the engravings and narrative pages are clean and bright. The pages are not at all brittle and there is none of the "foxing" or age-browning that ruins the appearance of so many engravings this old.
This is an original - it was made 144 years ago and it is not a reprint or a reproduction of any kind!
