Battey's photograph's won awards in galleries in the Unitedin the United States and Europe throughout his career. He became head of the Photograph Division of Alabama's Tuskegee Institute ca. 1916. He was a frequest contributor to W.E.B. DuBouis's journal THE CRISIS, and his portraits often appeared on the cover. Battey photographed local scenes and people, and well-k...nown and influential figures such as Paul Laurence Dunbar, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Calvin Coolidge, and W.E.B. Dubois.
