Homer Laughlin Rhythm American Provincial FR222 9 " Plates (10 Avail. ) No Damage.

The American Provincial decal was one of the first to be applied to the Homer Laughlin "Rhythm" shape of the early 1950s. This decal depicts a farmer holding a pitchfork in his right hand and a pail of apples in his left. The woman, (presumably the farmer's wife), is holding a pie (presumably an apple pie) in her left hand while throwing seed to the chickens with her right.
The simplicity and earthiness of this scene brings to mind the Pennsylvania Dutch who settl...ed in the area where I now live in Lancaster, PA.
There were three American Provincial decals found on Rhythm. The first and most common is RY104 with the multi-motif no trim border (see the last photo above). The second is the multi-motif found in RY104 with gold trim. The third and rarest is FR222 which shows only the center decal without the flowered garlands around the outsides.
The 9" plates on auction today are FR222s. These plates were also found with 6" plates, fruit bowls, cups and saucers that also belong to the FR222 pattern. They will be offered in separate auctions.
The condition of these 9" plates is remarkable. Most of these plates were clearly never used. The gold trim is complete and there is only the slightest indication of utensil marks on the face of the plates when inspecting them at an angle, in daylight, with reading glasses on. The underside of the plates show no scuffing at all which is also an indicator of use or not. As a collector myself, I meticulously look for damage and describe what I sell as accurately as possible. I don't like to get negative surprises when I open the box, and I don't want you to get any either.
I believe FR222 to be the fancier, more formal version of RY104. These are beautiful plates and you will not be disappointed in their condition or their mid-century modern timelessness.
