SC - 197 PMG AU58 EPQ 1s3d July 6, 1789 South Carolina Colonial Currency
Item History & Price
Very Rare July 6, 1789 "1 Shilling and 3 Pence" South Carolina Colonial Currency Note. Very conservatively graded & certified by PMG as AU58 EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality), with superb eye-appeal. Darkly inked with four large borders. Well-centered on the front. The "blank" back is nice and clean. This is a great note! No problems of any kind, and there are no pin holes. This is a remainder note (as nearly all remaining examples are) with no serial number, nor any signatures. This City of ...Charleston Treasury Note displays an interesting vignette of "Tobacco leafs next to a Coil of Hemp Rope" along with other fancy border ornaments on three sides. The denomination is spelled-out along with the printer's name "Abernethie" next to the Coil of Hemp Rope. Newman does not list any prices in any grades for this rare note (page 430), while Friedberg lists a price of $600 for a SC-197 in AU55 condition for a unissued remainder note (which is what this is), and $1, 200 for a remainder in CU62 PPQ. PMG has graded just (5) examples in all grades, with only one graded higher than this AU58, which would make this note the 2nd highest PMG graded SC-197 to date (over 15 years of grading colonial notes). Authentic & historical item issued in 1789 about a half a dozen years after the end of the Revolutionary War (1775-83), and almost exactly 13 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
