For sale is an original 19th-century antique oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of a Great Dane, a spaniel and a young girl within the walls of a castle, painted by British artist Thomas William Grimshaw (1817-1875). The painting shows a fawn Great Dane female looking at the viewer while laying at the top of stone steps upon a castle's wall, with a young girl in a yellow dress and a small black spaniel walking toward further steps behind. The painting is signed and dated in red paint on the top step beneath the Great Dane by the artist, Thos' Grimshaw, 1850/1", the 0 and 1 are overlaid.
The painting measures on the stretcher 26.5" by 36.5", it is housed in a large and heavy 19th-century decoratively moulded gilt frame measuring 38" by 48" inches and a 4" depth. There is an old "Re-Gilt" label verso from Charles Rowley & Co Ltd, New Cross, Manchester.
This is a genuine and authentic painting by Thomas William Grimshaw. There is a condition report is below. The painting will be packed safely and shipped in a custom-made plywood box. Shipping is high due to size and weight (18kg before boxing in plywood) and the cost of the packing required.

Artist Biography: Thomas William Grimshaw (British, 1817-1875). Thomas William Grimshaw was born on the 20th December 1817. He was the son of John Grimshaw a victualer and Workhouse Master. Thomas was a Portrait Painter by profession, travelling the country fulfilling commissions. He specialised in portraits particularly of children, often with their pets and ponies and paintings of favourite hunter horses. In 1844 Thomas painted his most famous work, a portrait of John Clare, the poet, which hangs in Northampton Library. Other works include "The Trial of the Pony" now hanging in the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, York and a painting "A Saddled Dark Bay hunter by Mounting Steps" on display at the National Trust, Calke Abbey. Thomas Grimshaw never married and died on the 20th February 1875 at the Leeds Infirmary and was buried at the Beckett Street Cemetery, Leeds.

Framed: Housed in a large 19th-century decoratively moulded gilt gesso frame measuring 38" by 48" inches and a 4" depth.
Condition: The painting is on re-lined canvas, the surface is aged with craquelure throughout the painting and in need of a clean, the canvas is uneven in places with some bumps near the top edge, a crude restoration is noticeable next to the top most window of the tower, the paint on the spaniel is worn and thin, there is light wear to the Great Dane, the signature is on a dark area of paint and is difficult to notice. The frame is age tarnished, dirty and worn with flaking and cracks to the gilt finish, there is a loss of moulded decoration to the lower left corner otherwise the moulding appears mainly intact, there is a chip to the wood back of the top right corner. The photographs form part of the description, please study all the images to fully satisfy yourself as to the condition.
