1865 Ogle County Illinois Volunteer Bounty Certificate with stub attached.
To our knowledge, this draft bounty type only comes unissued. During the course of the Civil War, the federal government, along with states, cities and towns, offered $750, 000, 000 in recruitment bonuses. The amount typically ranged from $100 to $1000 or more (which was offered by rich counties to fill their draft quotas with volunteers from poorer counties). This example from an Illinois emission that is da...ted April 1, 1865, less than two weeks before the war was essentially over. It may never have been issued as a result. The bounty certificate does have a heartfelt vignette of a soldier bidding farewell to his tearful family that almost seems like it could have been counter productive. This large format certificate is in immaculate condition, minimal handling observed, and would make a wonderful addition to any Illinois or Civil War collection.
