DURING HIS REIGN, THE VENETIAN NAVY FELL INTO GREAT DECLINE. ITALY WAS INVADED BY NAPOLEON BONAPARTE IN 1795, AND VENICE, ALONG WITH GENOA, TRIED TO REMAIN NEUTRAL. VENICE WAS GIVEN AN ULTIMATUM BY THE FRENCH IN 1797 AND A SECRET AUSTRO-FRENCH TREATY HAD GIVEN VENICE TO AUSTRIA. THE FRENCH SAILED INTO VENICE, LOSING ONLY ONE SHIP, AND DOGE LUDOVICO MANIN UNCONDITIONALLY SURRENDERED THE CITY. HE WAS THE LAST DOGE OF "LA SERENISSIMA". THE ZECCHINO IS A GOLD COIN THAT WAS MINTED ORIGINALLY IN VENICE FROM 1284 AD UNTIL THE FALL OF THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE TO NAPOLEON IN 1797. THE NAME OF THE COIN WAS ORIGINALLY DUCATO (DUCAT), MEANING DUKE (LATIN DUX, FROM WHICH THE TITLE DOGE IS DERIVED), MINTED AT THE ZECCA OR MINT. THE WORD ZECCHINO PROBABLY MEANS "LITTLE ZECCA" OR "OF ZECCA" AND WAS PROBABLY NOT COINED AS A NAME UNTIL THE 16TH CENTURY, WHEN VENICE STARTED THE MINTING OF SILVER DUCATO.THE COIN DESIGN, WEIGHT AND PURITY REMAINED PRACTICALLY UNCHANGED FOR OVER 500 YEARS, FEATURING THE DOGE KNEELING TO SAINT MARK (PATRON OF VENICE) ON THE OBVERSE AND CHRIST PANTOCRATOR ON THE REVERSE.
