In 1980, the Zimbabwean dollar replaced the Rhodesian dollar and was a highly valued currency in a mineral rich country. The initial exchange rate of a Zimbabwean dollar was higher that of a U.S. dollar. Many years of political instability in Zimbabwe lead to extreme hyper-inflation in the mid to late 2000s. The value of the Zimbabwean dollar eroded... until the complete collapse and official demise of the Zimbabwean dollar occurred in April 2009.
Zimbabwe now uses the South African Rand, Botswana Pul, Pound Sterling, Euro and the U.S. Dollar. The government cannot reinstate the Zimbabwean dollar until industrial output increases and stability is restored. $100 Trillion Dollars? That was about enough to buy a dozen eggs in 2008! The 2008 $100 Trillion Dollar note was produced during the height of the hyper-inflation period in 2008. By this time, the inflation rate had hit 231 million percent and the exchange rate was 758, 530, 000, 000 Zimbabwean Dollars to 1 U.S. Dollar.
