This is a VERY SCARCE PMG CERTIFIED 19th Century Banknote issued during the Garibaldi Insurgency in Italy. This Italian Bank Note was issued by the Soccorsco A Sollievo Dei Romani for 5 Lire in 1867. The Note features a Vignette of a Seated Woman (Italia) and a Child Suckling a Wolf on the obverse.
This Banknote was a Fund Raising Note to finance his insurrection in Italy against the Papal Army.

The Banknote is Uncatalogued and grades PMG 58 CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality) Condition.
Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi was a great Italian general, patriot and republican. He contributed to the Italian Unification and the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. He became a supporter of Italian unification under a democratic republican government. After participating in an uprising in Piedmont, he was sentenced to death, but he escaped. In 1848, Garibaldi returned to Italy and commanded and fought campaigns that eventually led to Italian unification.

In 1867 Garibaldi sought international support for altogether eliminating the papacy. He advocated that "The papacy, being the most harmful of all secret societies, ought to be abolished”. In 1867, he again marched on the city, but the Papal army, supported by a French auxiliary force, proved a match for his badly armed volunteers
