Today we are happy to offer for sale a pair of antique Mutt and Jeff character dolls by the Swiss manufacturer Bucherer (SABA)!
The renowned doll maker SABA, A. Bucherer & Cie of Amriswil, Switzerland made over 160 different antique character dolls 6 to 9 1/2" tall with a patented metal ball jointed body and a composition head from 1921 to 1935.
Mutt and Jeff was a long-running and widely popular American newspaper comic strip created by cartoonist Bud Fisher in 1907 about "two mismatched tinhorns". It is commonly regarded as the first daily comic strip. The concept of a newspaper strip featuring recurring characters in multiple panels on a six-day-a-week schedule had previously been pioneered through the short-lived A. Piker Clerk by Clare Briggs, but it was Mutt and Jeff as the first successful daily comic strip that staked out the direction of the future trend.
This classic duo from the long-running American comic strip by the same name are crafted entirely from metal, with articulated, jointed bodies and molded and painted heads, hands and boots. They are wearing their original felt three-piece suits. These fabulous dolls were produced during the 1920s.
Figures present well and are in very good antique condition, with wear and patina commensurate with age. There is minor loss to painted finish. Mutt (taller figure) has wear and missing fabric on his coat sleeves. Jeff (shorter figure) has some wear to the collar of his shirt and shirt front, and a small tear on the back of his coat. Please see pictures for details. These hard to find comic figures will make a wonderful addition to any toy collector's display.
