Original Description:
This is an exceptionally beautiful, exceedingly rare and special find!If you are a miniature collector, you may be familiar with Jean Tag's beautiful hand painted, hand thrown pottery and china. But you probably didn't know that, in her earliest days, she also worked in full-size, and then miniature, oil paintings. I never knew this and had to do some research with several living artisans who were her contemporaries. They have confirmed that this piece is one of Jean's rare miniature o...il paintings. Seeing the beauty and precision in this piece, I wish she'd done more, instead of turning exclusively to pottery. This is truly a gorgeous oil painting on board, done by Jean in the style of Renoir. The piece bears a label on the back, handwritten by Jean, that reads, "On the Terrace by Renoir 1841 - 1919." (The dates are Renoir's birth and death dates).  I would estimate the date of Jean's painting to be from the very early 1980s, but I could be wrong. In this painting, Tag captures the colors, light, and movement of Renoir's original. The painting depicts two sisters, one older, one younger, posing against a backdrop in which the lines of the trees seem to mirror the lines of the wrought iron terrace bars behind them, almost like a reflection in water. The painting is signed in the lower right corner, "Tag" (which, as I say, I have confirmed is Jean's mark). This is a large, oval-framed piece (see dimensions), which would allow it to work either in a home over a mantel or on a wall, or in a museum scene. It is framed (without glass) in an ornate white and gold oval frame. It is not a heavy piece, so the frame is not cast resin or metal; I suspect painted plastic.NOTE: This piece is in excellent condition for being forty years old. There is some white adhesive label residue on the back, probably from the original price tag.I always prefer to hang hand painted art work in my dollhouse, rather than photos or reproductions. And what a special chance to have something so beautiful and so rare! This is a wonderful opportunity to add true art to your "little life".For those who like to know about the artist (from A Reference Guide to Miniature Makers Marks):As an art major graduate in Newark New Jersey, Jean Tag turned her interest in art toward education and acquired the necessarydegree and certification to teach art. She resigned after 2 years of teaching, tostay at home to raise a family with her husband. During the fifteen years spentat home, she directed her talents to oil painting, completing many commissionsof historical landmarks in northwest New Jersey. When returning to teaching in 1966 she had torefresh her skills and many of the crafts once learned. It was the reunion withthe potter's wheel that captured her special interest. During the nationalBicentennial preparation in 1975, she participated in many community eventsdemonstrating the early American craft of wheel thrown pottery. Space and timewere limited, so by necessity pieces had to be small, so small in fact thatsome observers wondered if they were for a dollhouse. This also revealed the marketfor 1 inch scale china for miniature collections. This became Jean’s new pursuit. The journey to perfect this craft and produce what collectors wanted has seenno end. After being indoctrinated into the world of one inch scale, thepossibilities were countless. Researching periods and styles of china becameintriguing, but research and experimenting with clays, glazes, colors and paintbecame critical. Jean’s blue and white pieces of Chinese export design, as wellas delft and Meissen, became her trademark. All of Jean’s wheel thrown pieces are of white talc claywhich has been kiln fired, decorated with underglaze, refired, glazed, andfired again. The addition of gold trim or China paint requires a 4th firing.
