Alaska Native Inuit artist Rosalie Paniyak was born on March 25, 1934 and passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2007. She was a resident of Chevak, Alaska and is one among several Chevak dollmakers whose work contributed to the development of a distinctive regional style over the past decades. She called her dolls "the uglies" and has been featured in several books about Alaskan doll making artists. Her dolls are known for their witty, whimsical, and sometimes macabre faces ...which typically have long pointed noses and chins, with beads for teeth and eyes. She included hand written notes with some of her dolls describing what the doll is doing. Up for bid is a beautifully made handmade doll, made by Rosalie and the note I found rolled up in the pant leg describes the scene as a man going home with a sled full of firewood to heat his house. The doll is in original condition with no damage and measures 11 inches tall. He does stand on his own and is made from sealskin and fur. Many or the Paniyak dolls are now in museum collections. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
