Circa 1840. The shell and scroll pediment over two doors opening to four long drawers and two short drawers. The cabinet is finely hand-decorated in gilt on a black lacquer ground, the drawers have bone pulls, the drawer fronts decorated to show foliate sprays, the inside of the doors decorated to show bamboo, peony and rootwood, the fronts of the doors and sides of the cabinet showing figures engaging in various pastimes in courtyard settings.
The gilt decoration on the cabinet is ...above average in quality and in remarkable condition for its age, the interior is still bright and fresh, overall the cabinet is in very good condition. There is a shrinkage crack to the back board, which does not negatively affect the structure or the decorative value. There is no key but there is a latch on the inside of the proper left door, and the doors close flush and hold. Each of the drawers has a Chinese character in ink on the back, denoting the correct placement within the cabinet, a nice touch.
