This Ancient Hohokam Santa Cruz Phase Flare Rim Bowl dates from approx. 850-950 A.D. and is in excellent condition considering it's age. It has one small ancient rim chip and one loose shard, otherwise it is totally intact with absolutely no restoration, repairs or paint enhancement. The closely spaced hatching around the negative birds and amount of "trailing" lines on the underside is typical of Gila Butte. The term "negative", in the bird designs means that instead of the birds bein...g painted on the bowl, the paint was actually applied around the the design, with the design actually part of the pottery. Zoomorphic designs on Hohokam pottery are rare, and the use of this negative method makes this fine bowl even more rare. The size of this bowl is 9 1/8" in diameter and 3 1/2" tall. I acquired it on ebay a few years ago, and the person I purchased it from purchased it from a gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. The bowl is very thin, finely made and fragile, so it will be double boxed, well packed and insured. THANKS FOR LOOKING!
