This colorful miniature Hopi kachina doll was created by an unknown artist with the initials "M.H." It is incredibly detailed (especially for its size) and colorful.This marvelous "Velvet Shirt" kachina is likely carved from cottonwood root, as is the Hopi tradition. It is hand carved and hand painted. Velvet Shirt's head adorned with wonderful feathers. He has fine hand painted detailing with a great blue head and colorful kilt. He also bears a soft black tail... that I believe is real hair or fur of unknown origin, but I would guess dog hair (no skin!). The strands of black hair are very silky.I do not know for a fact that this was crafted by a Hopi / Native American, but given the collection that it came from I assume it was. Because I do not know who the artist is, I cannot list it with Native American attribution.It is marked on the bottom with the maker's mark "MH" and titled "Velvet Shirt."This doll is from the marvelous estate of Shirlee Greenberg, a former IGMA Fellow, an exceptional artisan in miniature needlework and an avid and discerning collector of American miniature art, accessories, and furniture.
