You are bidding on an VERY RARE and SUPERB example of a WW2 German Panzer Direction Gyroscope Transport Box! This compass this orignally carried, was located left of the driver position, these were installed in all tanks from the Panzer II through to the Panzer VIB "King Tiger!Because German tanks were made of steel, magnetic compasses could not be used within them. In fact, crew were advised to stand 20m from their vehicles when using a magnetic compass (...of course this changed later in the war when magnetic compasses were designed for the top of the turret roof).Larger tanks were therefore provided with a gyrocompass. It contained a gyroscope driven by an electric motor, powered by the tanks main battery. The first instance was in the panzer II, when it debuted in Libya.It was designed to assist the driver in keeping to his course without constantly remembering what the actual bearing is.In the main window there are 2 indicators. Both of them are horizontal rings, numbered as 12-hour clocks. The upper dial ('Befehlsrose' or 'master dial') can be adjusted at any time using the manual wheel. It is used as a memory of what the vehicle's direction should be. The lower dial ('Folgenrose' or 'slave dial') is attached to the gyroscope and therefore it does not turn relative to the ground. It shows what the vehicle's direction really is. The driver can steer in the desired direction by keeping the slave dial aligned with the master.The slave dial could keep its orientation even when the gyroscope was unpowered. After parking, the driver would lock the gyroscope to the vehicle using the button marked. The small window on the right would display the word 'fest'. He could then switch off the gyroscope's motor without losing its orientation. Before moving off again, the driver would power up the gyroscope and then release it using the button marked. The small window on the right would display the word 'frei'. Made of wood and steel, this Panzer Gyroscope Box is in EXCELLENT condition! This is the original box to my Panzer Gyroscope, that was brought back by a US veteran. Though it is VERY solid and complete, sadly, it is missing all the internal dividers. Some slight marks and scratches due to the age. Would make a good addition to anyone who owns the gyroscope. I have shown the type of Gyroscope that it originally contained in the last photos.
