Today we are delighted to offer for sale truly wonderful and quite rare Pung Chow complete 144 tile Mahjong set with extras! The Pung Chow Co. was a pioneer in the introduction of the game of Mahjong to the United States. The company was founded in 1922 and had factories in Massachusetts and Glen Cove, NY. Company president L. L. Harr traveled extensively throughout China importing antique Mahjong sets to the United States to serve as models for the sets produced by the company. The game of Mahjong was originally called "Pe-Ling" which was the legendary Chinese bird of "one hundred intelligences". The game was only allowed to be played by members of the Chinese imperial court but in about 1850 the general public was allowed to play the game but could only do so without calling it "Pe-Ling". The Pung Chow company created beautiful examples of Mahjong sets, most of which were crafted of Pyralin (like this set) which is a celluloid plastic supplied bu DuPont. Pung Chow went out of business in 1925, producing Mahjogg sets for only two short years.
This wonderful set is composed of 144 laminated 2-tone (black & white) tiles and includes a beautiful wood box with bronze mounts (2 metal corners are missing but you likely would never have noticed if we didn't mention it) emblazoned on top in gilt with the Chinese word for Mahjong. We have not been able to find another example of this wonderful box. All others seem to have come in a less elegant leatherette covered box. This is the rarest version of the set with the VERY special and rare Mandarin Men tiles for flowers/seasons! The set features Pyralin on Pyroxylin tiles; the front of each tile is bone-colored and decorated with the respective game piece; the back of each tile is black-colored. The set is composed of the following pieces:
1 wood storage case
1 wood inner tile compartment
4 wood inner tile-pusher compartments
2 score cards
2 dices
116 betting sticks
144 tiles: please review photos of tiles for each tile count; there are 4 tiles of each kind and 2 tiles each for the North, South, East and West Jokers.
Set presents beautifully and is in very good antique as-found condition, with very minor wear and patina commensurate with age and light use. The tiles have small signs of wear in a few spots and very minor surface scuffing on black reverse side as expected from handling. This is a truly a most wonderful opportunity to acquire among the rarest and most complete Mahjong sets from a pioneering American company...Fresh to the market from a local Rhode Island estate!
