British-born director Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980), who became known as the master of suspense, began his film career in 1920 as a designer of titles for the London branch of Paramount Studios. He directed the first of his 53 films, The Pleasure Garden, in 1925 and established his career in the suspense genre with The Lodger (1926). Other successes in England included The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and The Lady Vanishes(1938), which brought him to Hollywood. His classic suspense thrillers include The 39 Steps, Rebecca, Spellbound, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Psycho and The Birds, and Hitchcock also hosted two successful television shows, Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-1962) and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (1962-1965), which opened with his profile. Hitchcock received the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award in 1967 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1980.
