This was in my husband's family for years -- generations of his family were native Washingtonians, and his grandparents were very involved in the inner circles of DC for years -- his grandfather worked directly with FDR and was a good friend. We have never seen a piece like t...his anywhere else. It has the Presidential motif of the eagle holding arrows and olive branches with stars above, and the country of origin, "Italy", written on the bottom of the piece, before it was required by law to add the "made in" with the modification of the McKinley Tariff Act in 1914.
There was an extensive renovation to the White House State Dining Room in the early 1900's, this candy dish may have been an orphaned piece from that event during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, as FDR was was his fifth cousin -- that may explain the connection to my husband's family.
It seems to have been originally designed to function as a candy dish, but was used as an ashtray for a number of years. Because of the rarity of this piece, we have not cleaned it, but left as is to be cleaned by the buyer and/or a professional.
It measures approximately 5 1/2 inches from the top of the stars to the bottom edge of the shell.
