Up for auction is a lovely hand-built vintage rectangular vase by the Charles Halling Studio in Minnesota. The piece has a cream colored glaze, highlighted with rust and brown horizontal bands on the top half of the vertical pottery piece. The shape is slightly irregular but sits firmly on the square textured base. Signed on the bottom "Halling". There are some roughly horizontal scratch marks on a couple sides of the vase but these could have been part of the m...olding and decorating process. There are a number of pits and pops to the glazed surfaces but, again, I believe these are part of the artist's intent. The vase has been used, so there is some dirt visible inside. There are no apparent cracks or repairs.
Charles Halling (1937-2006) was a potter based out of Northfield, MN who began making wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces in 1971. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and the Kansas City Art Institute. His pottery expresses an interest in landscape, color, texture, geometric patterns and the indefinable feelings an individual has for the land.
The vase is about 3" wide on each side and 7-7/8" high. Due to the handmade nature of the vase, there are bows and curves to the surfaces. It weighs 2 lbs. 2.2 oz.
