France - Valour and discipline medal, Napoleon III Second EmpireVintage silver medal, Italy, Mexico, Crimean War 1850-1870France: Original “Valour and Discipline” silver medal from the Crimean War and Franco-Prussian War period 1850-1870 with profile of the emperor Louis Napoleon.Size: 26 x 14 mm (excluding measuring ring)34 x 14 mm (i...ncluding ring)The medal consists in a laurel wreath surrounding a silver medallion depicting the effigy of the Republic, surrounded in turn by a blue enamel circle with the text: " Louis Napoleon".On the reverse, the following motto is in the centre of the silver medallion: "Valeur et Discipline ". The laurel wreaths are bound by two twisted ribbons at the bottom and at the top.The medal is surmounted by an eagle with open wings.The medal is attached to a yellow ribbon with green edges.This military medal comes after the Legion of Honour (or possibly the Order of Liberation) and before the National Order of Merit.The Médaille militaire is a silver laurel wreath, 28 mm (1.1 in) in diameter, wrapped around a central gold medallion bearing the left profile of Marianne, effigy of the French Republic, the original 2nd Empire variant bore the left profile of Emperor Napoleon III. The central gold medallion is surrounded by a blue enamelled ring bearing the gilt inscription "RÉPUBLIQUEFRANÇAISE" (English: "FRENCH REPUBLIC") with a small gilt five-pointed star at the bottom for a 4th Republic award, three stars for a 5th Republic variant, the 3rd Republic variant bore the date 1870, the 2nd Empire variant bore the gilt inscription "LOUIS-NAPOLEON" in lieu of "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" and had flowers on both sides of the small star at the bottom. The original variant was topped by a silver imperial eagle with a loop through which the suspension ring passed, all other variants were and are topped by a device composed of a breastplate superimposed over crossed cannons, a naval anchor, sabres, swords and battle axes, to which the suspension ring passes through a loop for attachment to a ribbon. The reverse of the medallion is common to all variants since inception of the award, it bears the relief inscription on three lines "VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE" (English: "VALOUR AND DISCIPLINE") and is surrounded by a blue enamelled ring.[2]The ribbon of the Médaille militaire is 37 mm (1.5 in) wide, yellow in color with 6 mm-wide (0.24 in) green stripes on each edge. This ribbon was borrowed from the Order of the Iron Crown which it effectively replaced in France.Original era manufacture. A silver-gilt example of this famous award, presented during the reign of Louis Napoleon 1852-1870. Most of the blue enamel remains on the reverse, with some enamel repair on the obverse.The obverse displays the profile of Napoleon III, and the reverse, Valeur et Discipline.These awards were presented during Napoleon III's reignfor service in theCrimea, Italy, China, Mexico and of course the war with Germany 1870-1871. Complete with its original ribbon.
