Vintage Turquoise Glazed Foo Dog From Shiwan

This is a delightful and whimsical presentation of a Shiwan Foo Dog. Shiwan is the pottery capital of Southern China and the potters are known for the skillful sculpting techniques that produce lifelike sculptures of human figures, animals and birds. The foo dog is done in the traditional manner of having big round eyes, open mouth with slightly protruding tongue, long mane separating from its spine running from its neck to its fan out goldfish like tail. It sits on its haunches on a n... open work brocade ball, draped with flowing ribbons. The clay is a sandy white, very typical of clay from the 1920's period. Care was taken in applying the glaze, it pools in areas in a deep green color. Tiny under-glaze crackling have developed, they are good indications of age. It is 9.5 inches tall and 8 inches in width.
