Original Description:
FINE 18th Century Native American Trade Axe SIGNED WITH A GREAT TOUCHMARKS!Nice example of a typical style axe that would have been a valued item during the period of the North American fur trade.

Just purchased at the most recent Madison Bouckville Antique Show out of a Collection of New York State Fur Trade artifacts.Axe's were traded to Native Americans in exchange for trapped and hunted pelts, the transaction benefiting greatly for both parties and each thought the value of the tr...ade far exceeded their own merchandise. To the Native American the iron trade axe was an important tool both in domestic and agricultural usage but in times of war alike. If you are interested in learning more about the fur trade I highly recommend reading up on the subject, a truly fascinating time in our countries early development. One book that focuses more on the artifacts of the period is Lar Hothems book on Fur Trade era relics. There is a wonderful section in the volume devoted to the discussion and identification of period axe heads, several of which look almost identical to this example. As you can see this has a particular styled blade with an oblong pole design, indiciative of the age and usage. There is some nice signs of forging/original 18th century peroid construction to the piece.

Of great note is the fact this piece is signed on both faces with typical touchmarks used by French traders operating into Canada and New York State.  Overall about good condition.  There is noticable pitting to the piece from age and oxidation.  It's likely this piece was dug up at somepoint in its life (farmers often digging up buried axes found in fields during the 19th century).  The pitting doesn't go into the piece to make it fragile by any means, it is still a solid example, though the pitting does denote that its had a considerable amount of oxidation at some point in its life for an extended period of item, again a great attribute of an Original example!

Weight of the piece is 2lbs 4 oz.The axe head measures approximately 8 1/8" in length with 4 1/4" down the blade.

The most important aspect of this particular piece is that the touchmarks are IDENTICAL to those used by period Fur Traders! A nice opportunity to purchase an original Native American Fur Trade Axe up on a Buy-It-Now Listing!
