Item History & Price
This auction is for an 1861-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar. This coin has the distinction of containing the characteristics struck while the Confederacy was in control of the New Orleans Mint, after the outbreak of the Civil War. It has the 'Bisected date', identified by a die break on the left edge of the '6' in the date (see close-up photo). PCGS has identified this variety on the holder. This, and all other varieties of the 1861-O half dollar are described in d...etail in the Nov 2005 Gobrecht Journal article by Randall Wiley, and also Bill Bugert's 2013 superb book: "A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume IV" It's rare finding this double variety in higher grades.
