Runs strong but was not timed for accuracy and reliability, so some service will be needed.Elgin National Watch Company was founded in 1864, right as the civil war was coming to an end. The first watch Elgin was finished in April of 1867 and over the next 100 years, they went on to produce about 60 million mechanical watches. (Elgin factory brochures are added for interest only not related to this listing). Joseph Fahys & Co. was founded in 1857 in New York. Joseph Fahys was a French emigrant. Joseph Fahys & Co. is most famous for their production of the Dust Proof Cases during the 1880's. The company's handmade gold and silver cases are sought after and highly collectible today. Henry H. Taylor joined the Elgin National Watch Company board of directors in 1867 and was the first board member to die in office in 1875. Elgin was originally called the "National Watch Company". The name never really stuck and in 1874, they changed their name to the "Elgin National Watch Company" because most of the watch trade and public were calling them "watches from Elgin".
