A pretty traditional hair pin in antiqued silver tone metal CONDITION: good vintage condition with expected wear SIZE: 5½ ins h x 2 ins w (14 x 5 cm) APPROXIMATE DATE: 1890s – 1900s MATERIALS: metal, rhinestones DESCRIPTION: Here is a pretty metal hair comb whose light filigree likeappearance is typical of the hair accessories which appeared around the turn ofthe 20th century. It is made in silvery metal in an openwork loopsdesign which is further embel...lished with clear rhinestones.Changes in the manner of dressing the hair in the late 1800s led to a tastefor smaller and lighter hair accessories than those which had been fashionablefor the previous 20 years. The fashionable style was now the “Gibson Girl”look, where hair was dressed out over pads in a fluffy and feminine style withwisps escaping at the sides. With these softer styles the taste was for smallerornaments, especially those with a light, openwork appearance.The collage picture shows similar hair accessories taken from contemporarysources and indicates the hair fashions in which they were employed.
