This item is a set of 4 antique O.&E.G. Limoges Hand Painted "Vegetable" dishes.
These lovely dishes were made in Austria between 1884 and 1918.
Included in this set are: 1) Oblong Plate with Handle and decorated with 3 ears of corn.
... 11" x 6 3/4" x 3" tall to the top of the handle.
2) Salad/ Vegetable Bowl with Cucumbers
7 3/4" across the top x 4 1/2" across the bottom x 1 1/2" tall
3) Salad/Vegetable Bowl with Vine Ripened Cherries
7 3/4" across the top x 4 1/2" across the bottom x 1 1/2" tall
4) Relish/ Condiment Bowl with Radishes
5 1/8" wide x 6 3/4" long x 1 5/8" tall
There are several light utensil marks in the bowl with cherries, as well as some light tarnish on the gold trim and light wear in a couple of locations.
The bowl with Cucumbers and Radish condiment Bowl are in excellent condition and show very well.
The handle on the corn dish has a tiny flea sized nick on the tip of the petal, and a hard to see hairline crack around the underside of the flower shaped thumb rest.
The corn dish itself shows no wear at all and is in near-mint condition.
The paintings on all of the dishes shows spectacularly well - the colors appear as vivid as the day the artist put paint to porcelain!

The O.&E.G. Royal Austria was established in Altrohlau, Austria in 1884 by Max Marx and Oscar Gutherz (1856-1935).
Oscar Gutherz worked for a brief period in Limoges, France in the 1880's.
These were in the early days of his career, when he was a decorator for Jean Pouyat Limages (JPL).
Monsieur Gutherz would return to Austria in 1884, and open his own ceramics factory, complete with a decorating studio.
His brother Edgar joined the firm in 1898 after buying the shares owned by the partner Max Marx.
In 1918, the brothers sold the factory to OEPIAG, who would later change their name to EPIAG in 1920.
What is really interesting about these dishes is the subject matter.
Most often you'll see Limoge plates painted with decorative flowers along with cute little insects.
A still life with cucumbers, radishes and corn on Limoges porcelain are nearly unheard of.
Needless to say this artist - M.E.S. - was a talented and skilled painter.
I have seen his initials on other J.P.L. pieces; I believe he was a well known porcelain decorator of his time.
I have tried to locate information on M.E.S., but have been unsuccessful.
These beautiful dishes would make a lovely addition to any collection, or great starting pieces for the collector of tomorrow!
