1901 McCall's Magazine "The Queen of Fashion"~ November, Color Plates, Home Sewing... Patterns ~
~ Description ~
This is an early issue of McCall's Magazine during the Belle Epoque era when it was subtitled "The Queen of Fashion."
Since McCall's is the advertising vehicle for their home line of sewing patterns, this issue contains some stunning illustrations of walking and promenade costumes, an opera cape, waists, blouses, skirts, girls' dresses, military blouse jackets, boys' suits, nightowns, undergarments, and MORE.
This small format magazine is 11" x 8" and has about 60 pages.
~ Historical Background ~ Scottish immigrant, James McCall, created "The Queen" in 1870, intended as a marketing vehicle for his home line of sewing patterns. It was renamed "McCall's Magazine: The Queen of Fashion" by his widow in 1897 and expanded to include homemaking tips, stories, and articles on children's issues, travel. Eventually becoming "McCall's" for short, it was published monthly until 2000 at which time Rosie O'Donnell became the editorial director and renamed the magazine "Rosie, " which ended two years later.Notable: McCall's was the first magazine to print an entire novel in an issue, and also the first magazine to take a patriotic position at the start of World War II to encourage rationing and consumer thrift to which 150, 000 women responded with mailed pledges in three weeks.
~ Condition ~ Good condition. Front cover attached (back is detached) with some minor fraying and mostly bright and clean with a few smudges along the front left margin and back edges. Interior pages with few issues, a few pin holes on a couple of pages, but mostly clean and bright with no markings, cut-outs or missing pages. This item is a vintage product, used, with appropriate wear and tear, sold "As Is." Please consult photos to determine condition or please feel free to ask questions.
