ItemAntique Russian Bashlyk Cossack HoodDimensionsapprox. 45" longConditionFair-Good Condition - small holes and expertly done old repairs; yellow stainsDescriptionThis listing is for a very rare original Russian bashlyk hood from the 19th or early 20th century. The hood was deaccessioned from the the Brooklyn Museum in New York City and is a fine... example of this type of traditional Cossack headdress. The museum records identify this is a 19th century bashlyk, but most of these that I have seen were made around the WWI era, so it might be early 20th century. What's particularly nice about this one, however, is that it is decorated with metallic trim and a large metallic tassel. I have not seen other examples such as this, so the 19th century date may well be correct. There are no stamps or markings of any kind on the inside. The long flaps wrap around the body, or can be wrapped around the neck as a scarf, while the hood part serves it's obvious purpose. There are a number of small moth holes as shown in the photos, and a couple very well done repairs (possibly by museum conservators). The is also noticeable yellow staining on the front, which looks to me like old oxidized blood stains suggesting that this may have been worn in battle (these later developed into purely ceremonial garments). A remarkable historic artifact suitable for any collection of Russian history, military uniforms, traditional garments, or antique textiles.

Small holes or stains, missing sequins/beads, worn trim, and other marks related to standard wear are common and do not detract from the value of most pieces. Please keep in mind that a vintage textile or garment in very good condition might still show signs of use, storage and age.
