Chris Heilman, as an avid deep sea fisherman , captain of a chartered fishing boat, and scuba diver, was able to incorporate in his art glass his love of the ocean. His work is cherished by collectors and exhibited by many museums, including the Portland Art Museum. The late Jacques Coustea was an owner of one of his coral reef sculptures. Sadly, Chris passed away in October 2017.
This artistic creation features a yellow butterfly fish swimming along near the ocean floor filled with... coral reef, encrusting sponges , and a varied collection of ocean botanicals. The colors are striking and contrast so well with the images the artist designed. The artist is a master in the intricate technique of lampwork and exotic cane making as well as the layering of his imagery. The photographs will provide a far better look into the exquisite artistry of this piece than any written description I can provide. A look into the clear glass encased paperweight will enrapture you just as ocean air reenergizes us. I've always enjoyed Chris' work, not only for the details, but his tendency to put a whimsical touch on his marine imagery.
Since my purchase of this item in 2007( I purchased it new), the paperweight has been in an enclosed curio cabinet. It is in perfect condition. The paperweight is 3 5/8" in diameter with a height of about 2 3/4" It weighs about 1 lb 14oz.
The paperweight is authenticated with the artist's signature/ date scratch signed on the perimeter of the base, "Chris Heilman 2007." A further inscription reads, "Butterfly." In order to ensure the stability of the paperweight, the artist added 3 raised plastic pads on the bottom surface.
