This set is the 1930's design of Austrian Carl Aubock from the Wiener Werkstatte (however it is unmarked). This tambour lid box and ashtray must have been a high-end luxury item when it was new, due to the wood that's used. It's made from distinctive Macassar Ebony, with chrome-plated brass trim on the bo...x and two chrome-plated cigarette rests. The base measures 9.75" long x about 5.5" wide, and the box measures about 3 7/8" x 4.25" x about 1 5/8". It's in overall excellent shape -- there are some marks here and there in the finish (the 'worst' is in the round ashtray area), but considering the age of the item, it's all pretty minor. The tamboured lid works perfectly, and the box interior is lush with color. The chrome trim has some marks throughout, but here again none of it detracts from this set's overall beauty. I believe it originally came with a round copper ashtray that sat in the round indentation, but it didn't come with this piece when I bought it.
This is a gorgeous example of craftsmanship and design, and would be a welcome addition in any Deco or Mid-Century Modern collection (and even if you aren't a smoker!). Please do email me if you have any questions or need to verify anything.
