Pflueger Lures
The pflueger lures and the Pflueger lure company set the bar for American made fishing tackle makers. Being able to supplant the later giant James Heddon of Dowagiac Michigan with generational items such as the Summit Reel or the Supreme. Pflueger Lures were cataloged as early as 1883, although it is said that the company in some form or facet dates back to 1864. Pflueger’s first... patent was for the paint that was applied to the lure giving it luminescent properties. Pflueger lures come on many mediums including leather, cork, metal, wood, rubber, glass, and pearl.
Pre 1900 Pflueger lures comprised mostly or metal, rubber and focus more on the period type of fishing. Skittering was a type of fishing on top of the lure using a long bamboo pole to skirt the lure on tfe top using lures like its famous lures such as the now famous Pflueger May bug lure. Early spinning lures such as the Crystal minnow, or Flying Helgramite to bring up lunkers from the deep. Obviously the early rubber, crystal, leather and other lure mediums that weren’t meant to transcend time are hard to find due to environmental hazards or just age themselves. There were some interesting things made by Pflueger Enterprise Manufacturing Company, this like horse saddle and bridal rosettes, made of crystal and metal.
As with many other manufactures at the turn of the Century the Pflueger lure arsenal would add wood to its materials. Adding lures such as the Pflueger Lure the Wizard, and Monarch and Neverfail lures to compete with the the other makers who were now focused heavily on 3 and 5 hook underwater minnows. Pflueger sold their trade minnows under many different names in the tees, such as Senate, Kingfisher, Congress, Triumph, Sterling and more. Pflueger stayed true to its use of metal creating spinners and spoons some with fancy ornate designs, others with the plane stamped kidney or flute. Pflueger continued to make rubber lures in the for of Frogs and insect lures, and began to focus a lot of its attention to ts reels.
