The Bat is 39 5/8” long and weight is 1 lb 12.6 ounces and is slightly domed on top and bottom with a small gold colored insert and ring loop for hanging On each end. Has some gold paint loss around the top tip.
Dated 1869 the bat is decorated in gold and black on a reddish brown background with a black... stripe at the tip and red stripe at the handle and gold decoration at both ends.
THE BAT HAS BEEN A FAMILY HEIRLOOM FIRST BELONGING TO Henry Americus Dawson (1854-1937) passed to Henry A. Dawson JR. Then to Janet Dawson Kirby of Rockville Maryland. The writing on Bat reads as follows : AWARDED TO THE MONTGOMERY BASE BALL CLUB By the Montgomery Agricultural Society as a premium to the victorious party in a match Game played on the fair Grounds on September 3, 1869 For those of you familiar with Montgomery county Maryland the fairgrounds reference is not the one currently in Gaithersburg, but the one that was originally located on what’s now Wisconsin ave in Bethesda where the farmers market is held. The lot where the field was is likely now the rear paid parking lot.
Only 5 trophy bats of this vintage have been located one was featured on the antique roadshow.
