Peter Basch was born in Berlin, Germany, the only child of Felix Basch and Grete Basch-Freund, both prominent theater and film personalities of the German-speaking world. In 1933 the family came to New York due to fears of rising anti-Jewish sentiment and laws in Germany. The family had US citizenship because Felix's father, Arthur Basch, was a wine trader who lived in San Francisco. After moving back to Germany, Arthur Basch kept his American citizenship, and passed it to his children and, thence, to his grandchildren. When the Basch family arrived in New York in 1933, they opened a restaurant on Central Park South in the Navarro Hotel. The restaurant, Gretel's Viennese, became a hangout for the Austrian expatriate community. Peter Basch had his first job there as a waiter. While in New York, Basch attended the De Witt Clinton High School. The family moved to Los Angeles to assist in Basch's father's career, during which time Basch went to school in England. Upon returning to the United States, Basch joined the Army. He was mobilized in the US Army Air Forces' First Motion Picture Unit, where he worked as a script boy. After the war, he started attending UCLA and started taking photographs of young starlets working with other photographers and film studios. His mother asked him to join her back in New York after she and his father decided that Basch should be a photographer and they obtained a photography studio for their son. For over twenty years, Peter Basch had a successful career as a magazine photographer. He was known for his images of celebrities, artists, dancers, actors, starlets, and glamour-girls in America and Europe. His photos appeared in many major magazines such as Life, Look and Playboy. The Peter Basch Collection includes iconic images of all the major midcentury stars, from Europe and America. These masterful images are a window onto a time we cannot forget, when movie stars stepped out of the studio’s control, and we began to see these larger-than-life performers as full, three-dimensional personalities. Basch’s images capture the heart and spirit of these glamorous performers. Taking pictures in natural light, out in the world, we see these stars as full human beings, not the carefully made-up, studio-approved icons of oldfashioned Hollywood. Basch was able to capture the moments of a human being’s spirit, their mercurial reactions, all the facets that made these magnetic individuals the stars they were. Basch authored and co-authored a number of books containing his photographs including: Candid Photography (1958 with Peter Gowland Basch and Don Ornitz Basch) Peter Basch's Glamour Photography (A Fawcett How-To Book) (1958) Peter Basch photographs beauties of the world (1958) Camera in Rome (1963 with Nathan and Simon Basch) Peter Basch Photographs 100 Famous Beauties (1965) The nude as form & figure (1966) Put a Girl in Your Pocket: The Artful Camera of Peter Basch (1969) Peter Basch's Guide to Figure Photography (1975 with Jack Rey) Thoughts on Peter Basch by his daughter: "My Father, Peter Basch, saw. He looked and he saw. He taught me to see. He taught me to listen and hear. We used to play a game when I was little. He’d say, Michele, look at the street then look at me, what did you see? I would list the cars, red, black, navy; people, fat, tall, thin; children, parents; trees and plants. He would add the detail. A blue car with New York plates, a black car with New Jersey plates. The people were not just tall or small, thin or fat, they wore coats or sweaters, they laughed or were sad. The trees had leaves, were close together, the green was dark, vivid, the sun playing with the shadow. My Father saw. He captured in his mind and on film the unexpected moment in time, the interaction between two people, the look, the thought, the breath that punctuated the decision. My Father was one of the great romantics. He had a true love and appreciation of beauty in its purest form. We would talk about BEAUTY and her differences: natural, Hollywood, young, old and the beauty of communication, interaction, the Beauty of the moment. He recorded the breath in time on film: two ladies in Paris reading the paper, a Dachshund looking around the corner, a chair in front of the Eiffel Tower. My Father saw the thought and seized it for posterity. My Father understood the language light speaks to shadow. He showed me how the sun plays with dark. His favorite moment was at Sunrise when the shadows were long and soft. He saw every hue from white to black and everything in between. He understood the language, taught and published books on Light and Shadow, Form and Figure. I traveled through Europe with my Father. I was his assistant! And proud of it! I was the camera person! Changed the film, made sure the lens was clean, stood in during special poses, helped in the dark room, retouched to refine and perfect. I loved watching him talk and listen. He listened to Jane Fonda, Ursula Andress, Brigit Bardot, Fellini, Mastroiani and so many more. He listened and recorded the answer, the thought, that moment of indecision, realization and Seduction." Born and raised in New York City, Lane made her screen debut at the age of 13 in George Roy Hill's 1979 film A Little Romance, starring opposite Sir Laurence Olivier. Soon after, she was featured on the cover of Time magazine. She has since appeared in several notable films, including the 2002 film Unfaithful, which earned her Academy Award, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.
Lane was born in New York City. Her mother, Colleen Leigh Farrington, was a nightclub singer and Playboy centerfold (Miss October 1957), who was also known as "Colleen Price". Her father, Burton Eugene Lane, was a Manhattan drama coach who ran an acting workshop with John Cassavetes, worked as a cab driver, and later taught humanities at City College.[1] When Lane was 13 days old, her parents split up. Her mother went to Mexico and obtained a divorce while retaining custody of her daughter until the child was six. Her father got custody of her after Farrington moved to Georgia. Lane and her father lived in a number of residential hotels in New York City and she would ride with him in his taxi.

When Diane Lane was fifteen years old, she declared her independence from her father and ran away to Los Angeles for a week with actor and friend Christopher Atkins. Lane later remarked, "It was reckless behavior that comes from having too much independence too young." She returned to New York and moved in with a friend's family, paying them rent. In 1981, she enrolled in high school after taking correspondence courses. However, Lane's mother kidnapped her and took the teenager back to Georgia. Lane and her father challenged her mother in court and six weeks later she was back in New York. Lane did not speak to her mother for the subsequent three years, but they have since reconciled.

Lane's maternal grandmother, Eleanor Scott, was a thrice-married Pentecostal preacher of the Apostolic denomination, and Lane was influenced by the theatrical quality of her grandmother's sermons. Lane began acting professionally at the age of six at the La MaMa Experimental Theater Club in New York, where she appeared in a production of Medea. At 12 she had a role in Joseph Papp's production of The Cherry Orchard with Meryl Streep. Also at this time, Lane was enrolled in an accelerated program at Hunter College High School and was put on notice when her grades suffered from her busy schedule. At 13 years old, she turned down a role in Runaways on Broadway to make her feature film debut opposite Laurence Olivier in A Little Romance. Lane won high praise from Olivier who declared her 'The New Grace Kelly'. At the same time Lane was featured on the cover of Time, which declared her one of Hollywood's "Whiz Kids."

In the early 1980s, Lane made a successful transition from child actor to adult roles. Her breakout performances came with back-to-back adaptations of young adult novels by S. E. Hinton, adapted and directed by Francis Ford Coppola: The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, both in 1983. Both films also featured memorable performances from a number of young male actors who would go on to become leading men in the next decade (as well as members of the so-called "Brat Pack"), including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez, the late Patrick Swayze, Mickey Rourke, Nicolas Cage, and Matt Dillon. Lane's distinction among these heavily male casts advanced her career while affiliating her with this young generation of male actors. Andy Warhol proclaimed her, "the undisputed female lead of Hollywood's new rat pack."

However, the two films that could have catapulted her to star status, Streets of Fire (she turned down Splash and Risky Business for this film) and The Cotton Club, were both commercial and critical failures, and her career languished as a result.[1] After The Cotton Club, Lane dropped out of the movie business and lived with her mother in Georgia. According to the actress, "I hadn't been close to my mom for a long time, so we had a lot of homework to do. We had to repair our relationship because I wanted my mother back".
Lane returned to acting to appear in The Big Town and Lady Beware, but it was not until 1989's popular and critically acclaimed TV miniseries Lonesome Dove that Lane made another big impression on a sizable audience, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role. She was given positive reviews for her performance in the independent film My New Gun, which was well received at the Cannes Film Festival. She went on to appear as actress Paulette Goddard in Sir Richard Attenborough's big-budget biopic of Charles Chaplin, 1992's Chaplin. Lane won further praise for her role in 1999's A Walk on the Moon, opposite Viggo Mortensen. One reviewer wrote, "Lane, after years in post-teenaged-career limbo, is meltingly effective." The film's director, Tony Goldwyn, described Lane as having "...this potentially volcanic sexuality that is in no way self-conscious or opportunistic." Lane earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead. At this time, she was interested in making a film about actress Jean Seberg in which she would play Seberg.

In 2000, Lane had a supporting role as Mark Wahlberg's love interest in The Perfect Storm. In 2002, she starred in Unfaithful, a drama film directed by Adrian Lyne and adapted from the French film The Unfaithful Wife. Lane played a housewife who indulges in an adulterous fling with a mysterious book dealer. The film featured several sex scenes. Lyne's repeated takes for these scenes were very demanding for the actors involved, especially for Lane, who had to be emotionally and physically fit for the duration.[16] Unfaithful received mostly mixed to negative reviews, though Lane earned widespread praise for her performance. Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman stated that "Lane, in the most urgent performance of her career, is a revelation. The play of lust, romance, degradation, and guilt on her face is the movie's real story."[17] She followed that film up with Under the Tuscan Sun, based on the best-selling book by Frances Mayes.

In 2008, Lane reunited with Richard Gere for the romantic drama Nights in Rodanthe. It is the third film Gere and Lane filmed together. The film was based on the novel of the same title by Nicholas Sparks. Lane also co-starred in Jumper, and Untraceable in the same year. She then appeared in Killshot with Mickey Rourke, which was given a limited theatrical release before being released on DVD in 2009. While promoting Nights in Rodanthe, she expressed frustration with being typecast and stated that she was "gunning for something that's not so sympathetic. I need to be a bitch, and I need to be in a comedy. I've decided. No more Miss Nice Guy."[18] The actress has even contemplated quitting acting and spending more time with her family if she is unable to get these kinds of roles. She said in an interview, "I can't do anything official. My agents won't let me. Between you and me, I don't have anything else coming out."[18]

In 2010, Lane starred in Secretariat, a Disney film about the relationship between the 1973 Triple Crown-winning racehorse and his owner, Penny Chenery, whom Lane portrayed.[19] In 2011, it was announced that Lane would play Martha Kent in Zack Snyder's Superman film Man of Steel that will be released in theaters on June 14, 2013. Snyder said of her casting, "We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."[20]

Lane will return to her theater roots in September 2012, headlining a production of Sweet Bird of Youth, the Tennessee Williams play at the Goodman Theatre. She will portray Princess Kosmonopolis, a fading Hollywood movie star, opposite Finn Wittrick, who will portray Chance, her attractive gigolo. This will be the first time she has done a stage play since 1989, when she played Olivia in William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[21]

In 2012 Diane Lane was featured in the documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide premiering on PBS October 1st and 2nd.[22] The series introduces women and girls living under very difficult circumstances and bravely fighting to challenge them. The Half the Sky PBS TV series is produced by Show of Force along with Fugitive Films.
Four days before the New York Film Critics Circle's vote in 2002, Lane was given a career tribute by the Film Society of Lincoln Center. A day before that, Lyne held a dinner for the actress at the Four Seasons Hotel. Critics and award voters were invited to both.[23] She went on to win the National Society of Film Critics, the New York Film Critics Circle awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 2003, she was named ShoWest's 2003 Female Star of the Year, [24] and was also a co-recipient of the Women in Film Crystal Award honoring outstanding women in entertainment.[25]

Lane met actor Christopher Lambert in Paris while promoting The Cotton Club in 1984.[2] They had a brief affair and split up. They met again two years later in Rome to make a film together, entitled After the Rain, and in two weeks they were a couple again. Lane and Lambert married in October 1988 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.[2] They had a daughter, Eleanor Jasmine Lambert (born September 5, 1993), and were divorced following a prolonged separation in 1994.[29]

Lane became engaged to actor Josh Brolin in July 2003[30] and they were married on August 15, 2004.[31] On December 20 of that year, she called police after an altercation with him, and he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. Lane declined to press charges, however, and the couple's spokesperson described the incident as a "misunderstanding."

Lane is also involved in several charities, including Heifer International, which focuses on world hunger, and Artists for Peace and Justice, a Hollywood organization that supports Haiti relief. However, she tries not to draw attention to her humanitarian efforts: "Sometimes I give with my heart. Sometimes I give financially, but there's something about [helping others] that I think ought to be anonymous. I don't want it to be a boastful thing."[33]
