19th Century Bronze Boxing Sculpture - Pierre Eugene Emile Hebert This is a very rare signed, original 19th century gilded bronzesculpture of a pair of bare knuckle boxers in combat by French sculptor PierreEugene Emile Hebert 1828 - 1893.A nativeParisian, Hébert apparently lived and worked in the capital until his death. Hewas born in 1828, and studied sculpture privately, with his father Pierre(1804-1869) and Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807-1852), both of whom pursuedmodestly succ...essful careers in the Salon and as public sculptors beginning inthe 1830s. Hébert learned extensively from their very divergent paths. Hébertbegan his Salon career during the Second Republic, with portrait busts ofeminent sixteenth-century figures that were immediately purchased by thegovernment. Wellrespected in official circles by the mid-1850s, Hébert was chosen, along withhis father, to represent France in the Fine-Arts section of the 1855 ParisUniversal Exposition. The state commissioned or acquired several of Hébert'sworks.Hewas a superb modeler of the human form and of ornament, and manipulated bothwith great complexity, whether in monumental format or in small scale. Hébert'sserial work especially reveals his modelling skill. His art bronzes range insubject from ancient mythologies--classical, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian--tocontemporary athletes: boxers, rowers, champions. The sports figures oftendisplay the florid neo-baroque realism of his architectural decoration.
