True World First Edition, True First Printing USA hardcover edition signed by Hunter Davies in October 1968. Published and released by McGraw-Hill on August 17, 1968 - BEFORE the U.K. edition by Heinemann on September 30, 1968 - to thwart two competing USA biographies, "The Beatles: The Real Story" by Julian Frost, published by G.P. Putnam - and "The Beatles" by Anthony Scaduto, published by Signet. The USA edition is the true first appearance of Davies' book - as McGraw-Hill outbid eight other publishers for $160, 000 - (equivalent to $1.23 million in 2021 dollars) - for US publishing rights.Indeed, it has been signed by Hunter Davies and inscribed, "To Jim with many thanks for everything - Hunter Davies, Chicago, Oct. 1968" on yellow flyleaf in blue ink, accompanied by a drawn caricature smiley face traditional from Davies' early period. He added a mustache customized for the recipient as well. Later Davies' signatures do not include the drawing.First issue dust jacket, which represents up to 60% of a book's value to collectors - is in VG+ to ++ condition, with minor dimpling and edge wear, tiny flake color loss in upper right and lower left corner of front panel and bottom spine edge, small crimp upper back panel corners, proper age mellowing. Rare in complete condition as most surviving dust jackets from 1968 are tattered, brittle and yellowed - with chunks of paper missing or with the original $6.95 price-clipped.
First printing book is in VG+ condition, with a light water stain top left inside front cover yellow pastedown with minor waviness to top corners of last 60 pages. Book is also larger and heavier than the U.K. edition, measuring 7 x 9 1/4, 358 pages, 2 lbs., with dust jacket in mylar protector, upon which a "Signed by Author" sticker has been applied to the protector and NOT on the jacket itself.
