KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIAHAJJ PILGRIM RECEIPTS1953-1956 SILVER RIYAL NOTESEvery year, millions travel to Mecca in Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage. Prior to 1953, the currency used was silver and gold riyal coins, as paper currency was prohibited. However, due to coin shortages during the Hajj, in 1953 the government issued a 10 riyal pilgrim receipt, backed by silver. Each note is multi-lingual, printed in Arabic, Persia...n, English, Turkish, Urdu, and Malayan. They were so well accepted, that in 1954 they added a 5 riyal note, followed by a 1 Riyal note is 1956. By 1961, paper currency began being issued for general public use, and he Pilgrimage currency was discontinued. This was the first time paper money was used in Saudi Arabia.
These Historical banknotes are hard to find in any condition. This is a 1954 5 Riyal Banknote backed by silver at the time of issue. It is around the size of a United States dollar, and has a beautiful design & colors. It is circulated, in nice condition, **tiny edge tear top left-see close up photo. Printed with 6 Languages on the note!
