SOWEI Beautiful MENDE Helmet Mask Sande Society
Beautiful traditional helmet mask, the forehead occupies almost the entire surface of the face, eyes, nose and mouth being undersized, the neck is wide.
The h...airstyle is very elaborate.
This mask has unfortunately been damaged, and the area of the eyes has a restoration (see pictures)
Commonly called Sowei, these typical tribal masks are used in the rites of the Sande women's society during the initiation ceremonies of the young girls. They are sometimes also called "Bundu"
William C. Siegmann uses the term Mende of "Ndoli Jowei" which means "dance expert" and also refers to the person who dances with the "main" mask of their society (In Sotheby's see bibliography)
For your curiosity, a visit to the websites of the British Museum and the Fowler Museum will show you some very beautiful examples of these masks
